Beautiful and rare chest of drawers/secretaire desk made by E Gomme (Later G Plan) in the late 1940s/early 50s.
It has the Utility Furniture Scheme CC41 (Cheeses) Logo stamped in the back, meaning that this was produced as part of the wartime scheme to try and produce affordable furniture needed for those that had been bombed out, etc. You can clearly see the influence that this had on E Gomme as this is clearly a pre-cursor of their Brandon range. The second drawer from the top also has an E Gomme label.
The drawers are a very handy and versatile piece of furniture for the home and would look great in many rooms. They are constructed of oak and oak faced ply with the quarter sawn (sometimes called “tiger oak”) wood grain making a lovely feature. The top drawer pulls out with the front unclipping to create a handy desk space.
The set has been sanded back and re-finished in three coats of clear satin varnish. It has then been clear wax polished for further protection and shine. There is a small knock on two corners of one drawer. They are otherwise in great condition. All of the drawers open smoothly and freely.
The set measures:
30” wide, 34.75” tall, 18.75” deep (including handles) and 28” tall to desk part.
